There’s a popular saying: progress, not perfection.
While you may want things to be perfect (I certainly do), there comes a point when the pursuit of perfection starts holding you back instead of moving you forward.
So the real question becomes: How do you know when it’s time to leap, launch, or jump?
The Illusion of the “Right” Moment
Many people get hung up waiting for the “right” moment — the perfect timing, the perfect conditions, the perfect level of confidence.
Sometimes that means letting days, weeks, months, or even years slip by. The time never feels quite right. Fear steps in and tells you to wait to avoid embarrassment, to prevent mistakes, to protect yourself from failure.
But here’s the truth: Mistakes are the fastest path to growth. If you wait until you feel completely ready, you may never begin.
A Small Example (That Feels Big to Me)
My guess is that most of my blog posts have at least one typo or grammatical error. (I almost wrote “blot” instead of “blog” just now!) If I waited for every post to be proofread again until it was flawless, I’d never hit publish.
And yet, my blog is something many of you know and love about me. You depend on it week after week. The consistency matters more than perfection.
If I waited until it felt perfect, I wouldn’t post at all.
“Are We Ready for a Capital Campaign?”
At Capital Campaign Pro, nearly every organization we speak with asks the same question: How do we know if we’re ready to start a capital campaign?
Some have been planning for a year or longer.
There are Specific Readiness Criteria
For example:
- A big, bold vision
- A clear plan to execute that vision (which we help with)
- A realistic estimate of how much the project will cost
- Basic systems and donation processes in place
- Clarity about who your largest and most loyal donors are
- A sense of who might give leadership-level gifts (we help here too)
Those are important foundations.
But here’s what I see over and over again – Even when organizations have all of this in place… they still don’t feel ready.
The Truth About Campaigns (and Courage)
Good campaigns rely on careful planning. They’re data-driven. They’re strategic.
But at some point, there’s no more planning to do. There are no guarantees. There’s no crystal ball.
Big decisions require thoughtful evaluation, including weighing the risks and rewards, considering the pros and cons. But eventually, you have to move from analysis to action. At some point, you have to go, because readiness isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision.
What Are You Waiting On?
Is there something you’ve been holding onto — polishing, tweaking, reworking — instead of releasing it into the world?
- A campaign you’re hesitant to launch?
- A conversation you’ve been putting off?
- A donation you’re ready to ask for?
What would happen if you stopped waiting to feel ready and decided that you already are?
Progress, not perfection.
Your donors, customers/clients, and staff don’t need perfect. They need vision. They need leadership. They need you to take the first step.
So what’s something you’re working on that you’ve been hesitant to let go?
Maybe it’s time to leap.
